When Savannah finally made it to the safety of her room Sunday, the first thing she did was take a shower and then carefully bandaged the claw marks in her stomach. They hurt, but she was in no condition to try to use any more power to even do a pain relieving spell.

Her first thought was to call Karla, but if Karla had been fighting and helping like she was, she probably was worn out too and it wouldn't make her a good friend to call on her in that shape.

So, she cleaned the gouges out as best as she could, and again missed having her big brother Wyatt in the area.

After getting changed for bed, she did something that had she been more awake, she never would have done what she did. She sent text messages to the people on her custom contact list that was set up specifically for them.

After making that bad choice -- because she hadn't told any of them that there was trouble to begin with, Savannah crawled into bed and sleep through most of Monday.

K-Mart spent most of her time out of the room, because she knew Savannah was wiped and needed her rest, but after a while she plopped her butt on her bed and sat there, quietly watching her.

She hovered. It was what she did.

Savannah knew that K-Mart was back and hovering, but waking up was just too much trouble right now. But, knowing she was back and safe was a very good thing in her mind.

At some point, K-Mart gave Savannah a hard enough shove to hopefully stir her a little. "You need anything?"

What? She could answer and fall asleep again!

She was also one of three people on the island who could get away with that.

"Sean," she managed to get her fuzzy brain to think on. "Call Sean. Make sure he and Annja are safe." She knew what it would do to her brother to lose his wife.

"And... oh. Oh shit."

Date: 2010-03-30 09:54 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] likethestore.livejournal.com
"Shit? I don't like the sound of that," K-Mart said. "What is it?"

Savannah sounded so wiped out, but so guilty as well. "Johnny. I think you should call Johnny. I may have text messaged him about monsters trying to rip out my stomach. I'm not sure if I told him I was okay."

Well, she would be.

She knew that Sean would call Eve once K-Mart called him to let her know that she was okay... but she wouldn't freak out as quickly as Johnny would.

Date: 2010-03-30 10:00 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] likethestore.livejournal.com
"I'll call him," K-Mart promised. "And I'll make sure that Sean calls your mom, too."

She knew Savannah so well.

Date: 2010-03-30 10:07 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] walks-two-paths.livejournal.com
Savannah nodded, dropping her head back down on her pillow. "Mom will take it better than Johnny will."

Savannah reached for where her phone had been dropped on the bed and handed it to K-Mart. "You might want to check who and what I said in case there needs to be damage control done."

Aww, she got to run potential damage control! That was... well... what passed for sweet with them.

She scrolled through to check. "Well... nothing that looks too immediate..."

Karla was going around, checking on her friends since she'd been AWOL all weekend. Getting to the door of Savannah's room, she paused. She didn't like the psychic scent that was coming from Savannah. Not at all.

She quietly tapped on the door. "Savannah?" she called quietly. "It's me, Karla. You okay?"

Date: 2010-03-30 01:57 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] walks-two-paths.livejournal.com
Savannah carefully rolled over to look at the door. Karla was one of the few people that she needed to see to make sure that her friend was all right.

"Karla?" She cleared her throat, realizing how hoarse that sounded. "I think it's unlocked."

Karla slipped inside as quietly as she could. "You sound awful," she said, though her voice was gentle. "And in need of a Healer. What happened to you?"

She started calling in her supplies without really waiting for an answer. With the amount of pain Savannah was projecting, she was going to be Healed even if she had to be dosed like a puppy, dammit.

unless that wasn't okay, hee

"Baby Godzilla dragon lizard monster," she said honestly. She was pretty sure that with Karla, lying and telling her she was fine was not an option. Not that she would.

Just like there was a good reason that hadn't tried to ease her own pain at all.

Really.

This was why Karla and Savannah were friends. Savannah had a survival instinct. "I heard there was a lot of that going around this weekend," Karla muttered. "I'd like to give you a once-over with Craft, if I may. You feel like you could use a Healing."

It was phrased like a choice! It really was!

...if you squinted.

Date: 2010-03-31 11:56 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] walks-two-paths.livejournal.com
She nodded, her permission a formality at this point -- especially if it was another friend who was a witch who could take some of the pain away. Karla knew she trusted her... well she should know. Savannah was too tired to try to work all of that out in her head right now.

"He got me with his damn claws in my stomach. Who knew that your stomach could hurt so much?" She frowned. "Stupid clawed mean lizard thing."

"Okay, claws in the belly?" Karla asked, shaking her head. "Not a good thing."

Without wasting any more time, Karla used Craft to assess the damage. Nothing awful (like internal injuries or organs being poked, thank the Darkness) but there was enough surface damage to explain the pain Savannah was in and then some.

"Okay, I have a new rule for you," she said absently, still probing the extent of Savannah's injuries. "No more letting things with claws poke you in vital spots."

Date: 2010-03-31 05:59 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] walks-two-paths.livejournal.com
"No more poking me with claws." Savannah nodded. "That seems like a very good rule. I like this rule." She smiled a little. "I have another new rule, too. Combining two of your most powerful spells one after the other can really wear you out."

"Silly Savannah," Karla chided, affection and concern in her voice. "Always keep something in reserve for yourself. Otherwise, you end up curled around something vital with no strength left to Heal yourself."

Because Karla always followed that rule. Really!

"I think this is going to need a Healing web," she continued, frowning. "The damage itself isn't too bad--at least, not as bad as it could be--but it's extensive. The web should keep you from having a spiderweb of scars on your midriff. It'll control the flow of power better than I will by myself." She called in a large wooden frame festooned with spidersilk and tucked it near Savannah's feet. "Ready?"

Date: 2010-03-31 06:20 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] walks-two-paths.livejournal.com
"I didn't have a choice," she admitted. "It just kept coming, even after I force bolted it and fire balled it and used a knock-back spell. It didn't even react when I hit it in the head with a branch. So I bound it and used a suffocation spell and it finally died and stopped trying to eat me."

She gave Karla a concerned look. "How much energy is this going to take from you?"

As much as she didn't want a lot of scars to have to explain to people and would really like for the pain to go away, she did not want it at the expense of her friend.

"I'm fine," Karla said, which in no way answered the question. "I spent the weekend a stuffed animal of all things. So, unlike some witches in the room, I haven't depleted myself recently. I'll be fine after a big meal and a decent night's sleep."

She called in her silver knife and nicked her finger, letting three drops of blood fall onto the threads. "You just lie back and think about how nice it'll be to be able to breathe without pain again," she said, sealing up the cut. "Don't worry about me."

The blood woke up the sleeping Craft in the web, and the threads started to glow. Karla started to sing, very quietly, pouring her power into the web, which caught and anchored it. It was like dumping a torrent into a funnel; what went in was chaotic, and unfocused, but it came out the other side in a strong but delicate stream. Karla was then able to take that stream and use it to coax the torn flesh back together, speeding the healing, easing the pain, and killing off the places where infection threatened.

Of course she worried. She did this where her friends were concerned. She also knew that she didn't have much room to protest or argue as she would do the exact same thing if their positions were reversed.

"I can't decide what sounds better, breathing without pain or a lot more sleep." She closed her eyes, doing as Karla said. "It would be nice not to have to explain anything to my family, either." That was the best thing of all, she thought. "Mom might get it into her head to try to find the damn monsters again and fight them herself."

Healing required singing, so Karla couldn't respond, but she could take Savannah's hand in hers for comfort. And try not to let show how Savannah's casual comment about her mother squeezed on Karla's heart. It had been six years, but their loss still ached. Sometimes fiercely.

But that was an inappropriate thought for a Healing room and Karla schooled her mind towards neutrality. She was a witch and a Healer and she wasn't about to jeopardize Savannah just because she was feeling a bit maudlin.

Date: 2010-03-31 06:56 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] walks-two-paths.livejournal.com
Wouldn't Karla be surprised to know that her mother had been dead for years and then she ran into her here, of all places? Savannah would be upset to know that she had unintentionally made her sad.

She held onto Karla's hand, glad for the comfort and let her eyes close as she relaxed more with the healing and the sound of her friend's voice.

The Healing was intricate, as Karla had said. There were several layers of skin and tissue that needed to be Healed and it was delicate work. So it was almost a half an hour later that the web had burned through the last of the spidersilk and Karla brought her song to an end. "There," she said, voice a bit hoarse and eyes tired. Neither of those kept her from smiling, however. "All set. How do you feel?"

Date: 2010-03-31 07:26 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] walks-two-paths.livejournal.com
Savannah moved slightly and she smiled at Karla. "I no longer feel like something is trying to escape my insides every time I move, so this is a very nice feeling," she said squeezing her hand. "Are you all right?"

"Yup," Karla said, stifling a yawn. "Just a bit tired. Mind if I claim the bottom of your bed for a bit while we talk? Or would you prefer if I let you get some rest? I can do that, too, you know."

Date: 2010-03-31 10:55 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] walks-two-paths.livejournal.com
Savannah moved over so Karla could get comfortable. "Stay as long as you like. I never mind talking to you or having you around."

Karla gave Savannah a smile and curled up in the offered spot. "I like talking to you, too. We don't get to do it enough, you know."

She stretched a bit, careful not to jostle Savannah--not because she didn't trust her own handiwork, but simply because it would be rude. "Hey," she said, sounding a bit timid. "Do you have plans for this upcoming weekend? Now that 'keep all my organs internal' has been scratched off the list?"

Date: 2010-04-01 12:57 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] walks-two-paths.livejournal.com
"No we don't and we should remedy that before I graduate... and afterward. I don't want to lose touch with you."

She lifted her head to look at Karla. "I do now. Where are we going or what are we doing?"

Karla frowned again. Why were so many of her friends seniors, dammit?

But she forced herself to smile when she announced, "Kaeleer. Thought you might want to see it for real."

Date: 2010-04-01 05:11 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] walks-two-paths.livejournal.com
Savannah had asked herself that very question ever since her sophomore year.

"Count me in, I'd love to go."

"Excellent!" Karla cheered. "We're going to have tons of fun, I promise. Plus, even though we'll only be gone for the weekend here, we'll have almost a whole week in Kaeleer. Time moves at about double speed there."
