Room 217 Friday Afternoon, After Workshops

Savannah was hanging out in her room and was feeling pretty cheerful. Yesterday had been a good day and she was looking forward to Saturday night.

Currently, she was sitting on her bed with a large book and a leatherbound journal. From time to time, she would shake her head about something she read, and then make notes on what she was reading.

Cheerfully oblivious thus far to any prehistoric-era hijinks going on about town, Anders stopped by Savannah's room as promised.

"Hey, little sis," he said, poking his head in through the doorway. "What's the story?"

"I have a date with Chris," she bounced. "Come in."

"You do!" Anders grinned at her and bounced a little himself -- her good mood was infectious -- as he walked in. "That's awesome. He doesn't like me all that much, but don't let that make you think again because he's a good guy and he won't hurt you."

She faltered in her smile. "Is it okay with you, then? If you guys don't like each other, that could be awkward, you being my big brother and all."

"It really is okay," Anders promised. "Honestly. He doesn't trust me much, but he's only looking out for his aunt. Now, if he decides the two of you don't hit it off . . . then I might have to kick his ass."

"Oh... he's protective of Phoebe?" She was smiling again. "He seemed surprised that I wanted to go out with him and not Wyatt."

"That's because Wyatt's the one who's always looking to score," Anders laughed. "And of course he's protective of her . . . we all are. He just thinks -- he worries -- that I'm going to get her hurt."

"But Wyatt is the one who wants me to date Chris because he trusts him around me. He really seems to distrust Johnny where I am concerned."

Anders thought about Johnny flirting with Phoebe, and what Charlie had said about him, and his eyebrow twitched several times in rapid succession.

"Yeah," he said finally, "I hate to say it, little sis, but he's not the only one who feels that way."

"Really? How come you didn't say anything?" She had seen his eyebrow twitch and wondered what was up with that. "He really hasn't done anything wrong since the shirt incident and he apologized for that.."

"You just . . ." Anders had to clamp down on a couple of the more uncharitable things he could think of to say. "You're a really special kid and you deserve someone who'll treat you like you're special," he finished heatedly.

Savannah smiled at him. "You really don't like him. He makes you angry."

"He's hot," Anders admitted reluctantly. "And he's a nice enough guy. But I hate seeing you all into him when he's not going to return the favor. That's just . . . it's not fair. You deserve someone who'll care about you as much as you care about them."

He might have some personal hangups about this sort of thing. Just maybe.

Savannah hugged him. "That's what Wyatt said, that I should have someone who was into just me and would care about me as much as I do him."

"See, this is why Wyatt and I get along," Anders said lightly. "We sorta think the same way on some things . . . even if we don't agree on our interpretations of Arthurian legend. Don't ask."

The look Savannah gave him clearly said that at some point she was going to ask.

"Chris seemed really surprised that I asked him out... and at first thought it was a prank that Wyatt had out me up to."

Anders laughed. "That's because Wyatt would. His brother's a good guy, though. I don't think he'll treat you wrong. If he does . . . I'll find a way to kick his ass."

"He did seem to like the idea of him and I going out... though he wanted to know why I didn't let him know I was interested before now."

"I didn't know you were interested before now," Anders replied, "or I might've dropped that hint myself."

Okay, so maybe he wouldn't have, given the animosity between him and Chris. But in retrospect it sounded like a good idea.

"He had a girlfriend," Savannah pointed out. "I don't poach on someone else's territory."

"True," Anders admitted. "That's one of the things I like about you, little sis. Wait, had? She's gone? Dammit, people need to stop leaving."

"You like me because I refuse to poach on other people's relationships?" Savannah nodded. "Wyatt said she went back home, just like Tannim did."

"That's just one of the reasons I like you, kid," Anders told her. "You're a good person and you've helped me out a few times."

He might have been pouting just a bit. "Don't care. I'm tired of people going away."

"You'll be going away..."

"That's a year off," Anders said quietly, and with great reluctance. "I'm not leaving this place a minute before then."

And he planned to prolong that year as much as possible, if he could.

"Promise? Because I'm not ready to say goodbye, Sib."

Anders reached out to hug her. "Promise," he said. "There's too many people I care about here for me to even want to leave."

Savannah hugged him back. "God. Lost too much family already."

That drew a frown from him. "You have?"

"Yeah... my mom was murdered when I was twelve and my dad..."

How did one tell your adopted big sib that you accidentally killed your father?
