After class, Savannah came back to the room to decide what she was wearing to the competition tonight. She was going through clothes when her cell phone started ringing.

Savannah grabbed her phone and flipped it open without looking at the Caller ID. "Hello."

"Savvy!"

She smothered a groan. "Hey Adam. What's up?"

"You don't write. You don't call. Where's the love, Savvy?"

"Well, considering every time we talk, you threaten my boyfriend..."

"He's not right for you, Savannah."

"I'm hanging up now, Adam."

"Savvy, wait." There was a sigh on the other end of the phone. "Are you sure he's the one you want?"

"I am, Adam. He loves me and I love him. That's what matters. Johnny is a good guy and I'm not letting anyone, even my family, talk shit about him or treat him badly."

"I just don't think he's the right kind of guy for you."

"Johnny is who I want." Savannah's voice turned frosty.

"Peace, Savvy. I just... I don't want to have to see you when you get your heart broken. The idea of someone breaking my little sister's heart just makes me all growly."

"You're part demon and you like showing off, Adam," she pointed out. She sighed. "Johnny's not going to break my heart, Adam, and I really wish all of you would just back off of him. If it ends badly between he and I -- and I'm not thinking it will -- that will be between he and I. Not he and I, a werewolf pack, a witch, some sorcerers and some half-demons. Got it?"

"You drive a hard bargain, Savvy."

"I'm a Levine." This should have explained everything since he had known her mom and had seen her grow up after he helped rescue her.

"And you'll be the death of all of us."

"I should be so lucky, fireboy."

Adam laughed. "About Christmas..."

Savannah tensed. "What about it?"

"Are you coming home for Christmas, Savvy?"

"I haven't decided yet, Adam."

"You know Eve is welcome to come with you."

"What about Sean?"

"Sean? Sean who?"

"Sean Nast."

There was a moment of silence and then Adam let out a sharp laugh. "Why would they invite a fucking Nast over for Christmas?"

"Because he's my brother and I have a close relationship with him."

"What the hell?! After what that family wants to do to you? Have you lost your mind, Savannah?!"

"Talk to you when you've calmed down, Adam." Savannah quickly hung up.

Almost immediately, her phone started ringing again. Savannah glanced at the Caller ID, but didn't answer it. Adam needed some time to work off his temper.

The phone continued to ring off and on.

Johnny heard the end of her conversation and didn't think he liked it.

When her phone started ringing again, he reached for it quickly and snapped it open.

"Adam? Quit fucking calling."

Savannah stared at him with wide eyes as he did that... and winced a little when she heard Adam's voice.

"Put Savannah on the phone! She can't just drop shit like that on me and hang up!"

"She can and she did. I suggest you deal with it. Don't make me break her phone," he said, his eyes on Savannah as he snapped her phone shut.

"Guy's a moron."

Her eyes were still wide.

"I didn't hear you come in." She swallowed. "How much did you hear?"

Because that was important, yes.

Johnny stared at Savannah, and folded his arms across his chest.

"Does that matter?"

She shook her head. "No, just curious where I should start, that's all."

She leaned against the wall, looking at him.

"From the very beginning, sweetheart," he said, which might tell her that no, he didn't hear all of her conversation.

Savannah moved over and sat down on the bed, the dress she had been holding dropping to the floor.

"Uhm... Adam called. He's a little annoyed that I haven't kept in better touch."

He raised a brow. "...and?"

"And I told him that I didn't want to talk to him because every time we talked he threatened you..." She looked down, clenching and unclenching the dress in her hands. "I've kinda been ignoring him because he's being all annoying over-protective big brother about us and it pissed me off."

Johnny laughed. "I kind of can't wait to see the son of a bitch."

"He told me what the problem he had was and I kind of put him in his place," she admitted softly.

"So... what's his problem?"

Savannah shook her head. "It's a stupid reason."

"Stupid or not, I'll hear it, please."

Savannah sighed. "He said he thinks you're going to break my heart. I told him that wasn't going to happen," she added hastily. "But on the off chance it did, it would be between you and me... NOT you, me and all of them." Her chin lifted and her eyes flashed. "Our relationship is our business, not theirs."

The muscle in Johnny's jaw flexed as he ground down on his teeth. "Is that right?"

He flipped Savannah's phone back open and pressed a button, waiting for Adam to pick up, when he did, Johnny said, "Fuck you," and hung up.

No, he wasn't going to make it easy on himself when he had to go and visit her family for Christmas.

Savannah groaned and buried her face in her hands. "It's a good thing we're only spending a day there," she mumbled. Too much couldn't happen in one 24 hour period... right?

"Sorry, but the guys a jackass," he told her.

"One day, right? Nothing too bad can happen in one day..."

"He says one thing... one thing, I'll flatten him," he told her.

Savannah nodded and then herself at him to hug him tightly to her. "I'm sorry," she murmured.

Johnny wrapped his arms around her. "For what?"

"My family."

"I'm not worried, sweetheart. Okay?"

"I'm more annoyed than worried," she said softly.

"I'll be nice," he assured her. "Only up until someone else isn't."

"I wish they would just get over it, you know?"

"Why does he feel that way, anyway?"

Savannah sighed. "Because he still sees me as a kid that needs to be protected, Johnny. He's been an annoying type of big brother since my rescue and then I grow up and fall in love with you and he gets more big brothery and annoying." She shook her head. "He may also be a little jealous."

He could get all of that, to a certain degree. "Jealous?"

She groaned and then lifted her face to look into his. "Do you promise not to laugh?"

"Cross my heart," he said, staring down at her upturned face.

She sighed. "I had a crush on him when I was twelve and thirteen."

Whoa. Johnny stared down at her, his brows lifted in surprise. "Seriously?"

The look in her eyes promised retribution if he laughed at her. "I was twelve! He had just attacked the compound with the others and rescued me."

She shook her head. "I grew out of it and he was just family -- and could be damned annoying when he wanted to be."

"So... what about when you were thirteen?"

"I turned thirteen shortly after the rescue," she explained.

"And how long did this little crush last, hm?"

"It was a stupid crush! I was a kid and it doesn't mean anything."

"Sure are defensive if it doesn't mean anything," he pointed out.

"Haven't you ever been embarrassed about something you did as a kid, Johnny? I'm embarrassed about it, okay? After that, whenever I have needed a fight and wanted to spar with very few hold backs, I used to fight with Adam. It was easy."

"Never about a crush on a chick," he told her. Seriously. "But okay, okay, chill, sweetheart. I'm not laughing. It's cool. But if Adam's jealousy becomes an issue, I will take care of it."

"I think it just annoys him that I've grown up and can make my own way. He was a protector for a long time... and now he's not the first one I run to for help." She looked up at him. "I come to you, now, if I'm in trouble."

Well, when she wasn't trying to protect him.

He captured her face between his hands. "I know you do." Then he bent his head and kissed her mouth. Thoroughly.

Savannah made a soft sound of pleasure when he did that and moved closer to him.
