Savannah was sitting on the sand watching the water and the waves. She was pretty sure she was going to enjoy all of her workshops. She had really liked Ghanima's class on Mythology, so it was no surprise that she was already looking forward to seeing what the workshop was going to entail.

The only thing she hadn't prepared for was the little sojourn into the past she had taken.

So, rather than go to the cabin right now, she had headed down to her favorite spot of the Serenity Cove.

She wasn't practicing magic or even doing any sketching. She was just watching the waves and the sky over the ocean.

It was possible that she wasn't aware it was getting dark.

Johnny was aware that it was getting dark, he also knew that he could find Savannah here. Loathe to interrupt her peace, he quietly sat down beside her, saying nothing, merely staring out across the waves as well.

If she wanted to talk, he was here.

Savannah was aware he was there and leaned against him.

"Do you know that when I was a little girl, I wanted to be a mermaid and live under the water?"

He smiled softly, his eyes still cast out over the ocean. "Why a mermaid?" he asked quietly.

"They were magical and beautiful... and no one ever seemed to be able to hurt them."

"Every child dreams of being something they can't," he said, turning his eyes towards her now. "We're you afraid of being hurt at such a tender age?"

"Not really. I mean, I knew when I was little that it was dangerous to be a witch... but I didn't know real fear until Tyrone Powers and the Genesis Project."

There was nothing that could erase that for her either. Johnny hated that she had those memories; of everything that happened. "Why so reflective, Savannah?"

"My teacher asked me what experience I had with madness."

"What was your answer?" he asked.

"The truth," she said, looking down at the sand. Her voice was quiet as she repeated what she had told Ghanima. "When I was younger... twelve... there was a man named Tyrone that started this project. His goal was that he wanted one of every supernatural creature in his possession. My mother and I were kidnapped by thugs who worked for this man. His people would perform experiments on them to see how they worked and we were monitored at all times. If you didn't do everything like Tyrone wanted -- like agree to become his weapon or work for him or something like that -- he had hunting fields. He would turn lose the person that had angered or refused him and then he and his men and their dogs would hunt them like they were nothing. His men killed my mother while we were there. She was trying to get me out safely and they shot her.If that's not an example of madness... I'm not sure what it is..."

Savannah sighed. "I think that's a damn good example of both madness and obsession, just like she brought up."

Johnny pulled up his knees, clasped his hands loosely as he rested his elbows there, and he stared down between his shoes, listening to her.

When she finished, he was still quiet, not sure what to say. What did someone say to that? I'm sorry just didn't seem to cut it. This was years ago and while he was sorry she went through all of that, that her mother had, saying sorry now seemed so... worthless.

"Did your teacher say anything to that?"

He didn't need to say sorry. That he was there spoke volumes for her.

"We started talking about the fine line between ambition and obsession." She looked over at him. "I don't think about it as often as I used to. I've been given other things that are much better to think on. Just sometimes when it comes up unexpectedly..."

"I'm sorry for that Savannah, that these memories come up and make you hurt, and make you think. If I could change anything for you, you know I would. I would do it, whatever it was," he told her, wrapping his arm around her shoulders.

[Antibiotics kicked in so I am really sluggish, I'm sorry.]

She nodded. "I know, love. I know you would. Just like I know if you were to see any of those bastards they probably wouldn't walk away."

The muscle in his jaw tightened. "I can safely say that no, they wouldn't."

"I know," she said softly, laying her head on his shoulder. "I'm a bad person because part of me wishes they could meet you... but the other part of me is glad you've never had to deal with people like that."
