After the way her Thursday had gone, Savannah had come back to the room after classes and decided that she wasn't leaving it until she needed to take her and Johnny's new puppy out for a little while.

She was sitting on the bed with her sketchbook and pencils.

The puppy, Destiny, was sitting near her legs, chewing on one of her toys and watching Savannah as she did so.

Savannah was trying to sketch the puppy, but she kept having to stop and giggle at something Destiny was doing.

The giggles coming from 217 might draw attention, but she didn't care.

Eve wanted to check up on Savannah, so there she was at the door. She knocked lightly.

"Come in!"

Eve opened the door and let herself in -- and then shut it quickly to keep from letting out the handful of puppy that was barreling towards her.

Savannah grinned. "Mom, meet Destiny."

"Eeeee, puppy!" Eve squealed, reaching down to scoop up the wriggling puppy.

Said wriggling puppy tried to bite her, only to quite promptly lick the bite almost as if to say 'I'm sorry.'

"Johnny got her for me."

"Aww, that's so sweet."

"He and I talked about getting a puppy over the weekend and then after our almost fight on Wednesday..."

"There was almost a fight?" Eve couldn't help getting a little worried at that, because who wanted to hear about their daughter almost getting in a fight with her boyfriend?

"Yeah... almost."

Destiny yipped and wriggled away from Eve to chase her ball across the flor again.

"Why was there almost a fight?"

"Because I was thinking too much."

"So I don't need to beat him?" Because really, she was at the point where she liked Johnny. She didn't want to have to go back to wanting to constantly kick his ass.

"No," Savannah said quietly. "He really didn't do anything wrong."

Eve sat down on the floor, reaching out to snag the ball as Destiny chased it past her. "What were you thinking about that involved too much thinking?" she asked gently.

"Protecting people... keeping myself safe... keeping you and Sean and Johnny safe..." She swallowed. "I thought I was making him feel smothered after he said something... but we got it fixed."

"What did he say?" Eve wrestled with Destiny for the ball.

Savannah was carefully not looking at Eve.

"He said that maybe we should put the brakes on..."

You could almost feel the tension in the air. Though to give her credit, she was trying to stay calm. "And why did he say that?"

"He thought that maybe the less time I have to think about him the less time I would have to worry..."

"... Does he not understand how your mind works? The less time you have to think about him means the more time you'd have to worry."

"I think part of him does understand that. I don't think he realized that him saying that would make me think that he felt I was smothering him."

"Your boy is an idiot. But all boys are idiots somehow, so it's okay."

"... he didn't mean it, Mom. He loves me so much and it scares him sometimes. He thought that him saying that would..." She sighed. "He felt bad as soon as he realized how it sounded."

"He damn well better have," Eve said. "He ever says something like that and means it, he's going to get an ass-kicking like you wouldn't believe."

She hauled the puppy into her lap. "Hold still, you, I'm talking to your mom," she scolded gently. "At least you two worked it out. That's what's important."

"He... he's worried about me and what I'm going to be doing..."

"Which is understandable. I'd be pissed if he weren't worried. But he does know you're not going to be doing it alone, right?"

Savannah nodded. "And that we want him there when I am doing these lessons."

"If you're practicing on your own, most definitely. If you're working with me or Sean, not necessarily. Not because we don't want him there," she added quickly. "But just because some of this stuff is... best kept between you and whoever's helping you. Plus I think Sean's going to see it as sibling bonding."

Savannah nodded. "Johnny said last night he was an outsider in this... and I told him he wasn't. I think you and Sean need to talk to him and let him know that you don't see him as an outsider, either. If... if he's going to stay with me, he needs to know these things."

"I will," Eve promised. "Soon as I get the opportunity, I will. Tell Sean and I'm sure he'll say the same thing."

Savannah nodded. "I don't want Johnny to feel..."

"I know, baby girl. I know."

"Did you ever get afraid - before you left him - that one day you'd push Dad away because of who you are?"

"Yeah," Eve said softly. "I'd watch him sleep and I'd think, How can he want me? I'm a witch and a half-demon." She smiled sadly, running her fingers through the puppy's fur. "And then I'd wonder how long it'd be before I started feeling oppressed, like he didn't want me to be all of who I am. Which is ridiculous, believe me. Your father was the most understanding man I'd ever known. But... something in me was still scared anyway."

Savannah looked down. "I'm afraid sometimes, mom. Afraid that who I am... what I am... is going to be too much for Johnny and I'm going to scare him away. I love him so much and... Clayton says it's because he's my first boyfriend... but I know better. There are times I think I need to protect him from me and my life, but I know that he hates that."

"I'm afraid, too," Eve admitted. "Afraid that Adam's going to decide someday that he doesn't want a witch. That if he knew the full story about my past, it'd be too much for him. I mean, I've told him a lot, but there's also a lot I haven't told him, y'know?"

"That won't happen with Adam, mom. You make him really happy."

"I know, but knowing and worrying are two entirely different things." Eve quirked a smile. "See? You're not the only one who worries, kidlet."

"I... I don't want Johnny to be afraid of me, mom."

"I know you don't, baby girl." Eve smiled gently. "He could never be afraid of you. Afraid of what you might do if your magic goes wrong, yes. But never afraid of you."
