Room 217, Thursday Evening

Savannah had come home after work and flopped down on the bed with her notebook. Ethics class was going to be an interesting challenge to get through without pissing off the teacher, she could already tell.

She enjoyed the class and she enjoyed Fandom Invasions... but she was thinking about the conversation she and Wyatt had started before drawing the teacher's attention to them.

So, she was now writing out the discussion question that she really had been careful not to answer completely in class. It was just too hard.

"Hey, babe," Johnny said, walking in with a bowl of popcorn in his hands. "What are you doing?"

Savannah looked up with a smile. "Tying to answer a question that was posed to us in Ethics today."

"Oh? What was that?" he asked as he sat down on the edge of the bed.

Savannah moved so that she lay with her head in Johnny's lap as she held up her notebook.

"When do you draw the line? When do you admit to yourself that a problem cannot be solved, that to sacrifice yourself isn't a statement, it's merely pointless? How long does it take for you to check your ego?"

Johnny brushed his fingers back through her hair, reading the question.

"For me it would be until I absolutely know I can go no further, and even then I would push myself. Not sure if it would be an ego issue with me, or more of a determination to see the problem done and dealt with."

She loved it when he played with her hair.

Savannah was quiet for a moment. "I don't know if I have a stopping point, Johnny, and that scares me sometimes. I don't know if it's ego or just the desire never to see anyone I love hurt or killed ever again."

"Love can be a pretty strong emotion at times, Savannah," he said low, setting aside the popcorn to give her his full attention. "The question seems unfair almost because if it were you I was trying to protect? Ego aside, I would die doing whatever I had to do, to do just that."

Savannah nodded, meeting his eyes. "I know, Johnny, and that's my feeling, too. If it was you being threatened, I wouldn't be able to stop until I knew you were safe." She sighed. "There's no easy or fair answer to this question because there are so many things that it doesn't take into consideration... even if his first example of ego was Umbridge and students trying to deal with her."

"How did you answer it? And Skywalker is your teacher, right?"

Wyatt came a-wandering by and knocked on the door.

Savannah looked up from her notebook. "Come in."

"Yes, Skywalker is the teacher." She frowned. "I answered it with more questions because I don't know how to answer it when there are so many other factors to consider. I asked him if it is the same thing if you're not the one who offers to sacrifice themselves, but you are convinced by others that are older than you and that you trust that your self-sacrifice will be what saves other people and allows them to continue to live?"

"Hey, kiddo," Wyatt said, walking into the room. "Got your message."

Savannah sat up with a small smile, pushing the notebook aside. "So, you need ideas of how to welcome the new sister you never knew to your family?"

Johnny frowned, continued to stroke her hair. "How did he answer you?"

Wyatt pulled out the chair from Savannah's desk, turned it around, and straddled it. "What says, 'Sorry our parents are so fucked up, but I'm glad to be your big brother'?"

"Wyatt... I'm sure we would both agree that I'm not your normal teenage girl, yes? I mean, the way the witches on my real father's payroll tried welcoming me to their family was by forcing me to be a recipient of a blood sacrifice." She bit her lip. "What do you know about her?"

Savannah closed her eyes. "It was a pretty good discussion, I think. I kept asking more questions to try to figure things out and he answered them... although he knew immediately that my hypothetical situation was not so hypothetical." She sighed and opened her eyes. "I am just not a very good liar."

"You're the closest thing I've got," Wyatt said, resting his chin on the back of the chair. "She's a little younger than you and just learning about being a witch. She's pretty smart."

She thought about this. "Okay. Is she as serious -- that you can tell -- about being a witch and stuff as you and Chris are? Does she like research like Chris, or doing first, like you?" She didn't think to ask him if he thought she was more like them or more like her.

"Which you shouldn't lie, sweetheart, and I imagine did you lie, he would know it and it would make your discussion with him that much harder," Johnny answered, bending his head to brush his lips across her forehead. "Some questions are just hard to answer without actually being in that position, having to act and react to a particular situation. Sometimes taking your time to figure it out, is worse that simply acting on your gut feeling."

"I hate lying, anyway. It's just not me. I'd rather be honest." She sighed softly. "Do you think anyone gets that, Johnny? I mean, look at what happened when Leah came to take me. I reacted with my gut and didn't tell you because I was afraid she'd come after you... and it made things worse because no one knew I was in trouble."

"Haven't really seen her in action yet," Wyatt said. "She's a full witch, not half-whitelighter like me and Chris. For her sake, I hope she's more like me." He winked at Savannah. "She seemed pretty into it, really wanted to learn how to use her powers."

Savannah laughed, her mood lightening a great deal.

"Okay, when my mom saw I was serious about who I was and my powers, she got me my own grimoire for writing spells in. It was helpful because not every spell works the same way for every person. Sometimes you need to work and re-work to see what is best for you." She nodded. "Also, you're her big brother. She may not know you, but all sisters like knowing their brother thinks of them and is looking out for them. Get her some kind of jewelery, but have it mean something."
