Room 217, Friday Night

Savannah had hooked up the DVD player that Benicio had sent her and was sitting on her bed with her sketch pad while something played as background noise.

She had a lot on her mind, and she was still kind of upset worried about Johnny.

So, she was trying to relax with her sketching...

...it wasn't going well.

Beauty was headed back to her room after seeing to Greatheart for the nice, when she heard the music coming from across the hall. Stopping uncertainly in front of the door, curiosity warred with a fear that she'd wind up seeing that Johnny guy naked again.

Well, the nakedness wasn't so much a problem, it was just the setting himself on fire part.

Curiosity finally won out, though, as it always did, and she approached the door hesitantly, and then gave a soft tap.

Savannah looked up from her blank page.

"Come in."

Beauty pushed the door open and stepped into the opening. She looked quickly around, saw that no one was on fire, and the berated herself for being silly.

"I'm sorry for bothering you, I just heard the music and wondered what it was. I live across the hall, in 218."

Savannah got up and smiled. "Oh, it's a group called Carbon Leaf." She extended her hand. "I'm Savannah."

Taking the girl's hand, Beauty smiled back. "I'm Beauty. And this is probably going to sound like a crazy question, but where is the music coming from?"

Savannah had been here long enough to know that kids came from all times and places.

"Not a crazy question at all." She pointed at the DVD player and tv. "I put a CD in that machine and it pipes the music out through the speakers on the television."

Beauty looked past Savannah at the...thing the girl pointed at. "Like a music box?" she hazarded. Although it sounded a whole lot more complex than any music box she'd ever heard.

It made her miss Orpheus.

"Well... kind of. It's more complex than a music box because of the computer and electronic parts that are needed to make it work."

So, it was like the alarm clock, or the telephone. Beauty nodded, and wondered if she could talk Wyatt into explaining these to her as well.

"It's nice to hear music," she explained. "Things get very quiet sometimes."

Savannah smiled. "I don't like it when it gets too quiet."

No, the quiet made things seem large and overwhelming at times.

"Adah and I have a very quiet room," Beauty said, waving a hand across the hall. "But company is always welcome, if you ever want to come and help make it less quiet."

It was a bold step for her, but spending time around people instead of only books had been working pretty nicely so far.

Savannah gave her a pleased smile.

"I'd like that, and consider yourself invited here, too."

Beauty's eyes scanned the room once again, and she added that possibly she would avoid acting on that invitation when Savannah's boyfriend was around. Which he didn't seem to be, so that was okay then.

"I won't keep you from your drawing any longer, I've got to get washed so that I don't smell of horse anyway. But it was nice to meet you. Maybe I'll start knocking on random doors regularly."

Johnny walked in with a big bowl of popcorn and a grin. He was wearing basketball shorts a fitted t-shirt. "Hey, baby. Whatcha doing?"

Savannah smiled at him from the bed. "Trying to sketch... it's not going well."

He set the bowl aside and sat down on her bed, looking over. "Why not?"

She shrugged. "Guess I have too much on my mind and my creativity is stifled."

Johnny reached over and cupped her cheek, moving his thumb over the softness. "Like what, sweetheart?"

Savannah leaned into his touch. "I guess I'm still upset about the radio upsetting you like it did." Her eyes were sad. "I don't like it when people hurt or upset you."

"Shh, sweetie. "I'm over it Savannah. Things like that just don't stick to me for very long." But just wait until he saw Jeff. "I care about you and I don't want you upset over me. I'm a big boy, I can handle it."

Savannah nodded. "I know you can handle it, Johnny. Doesn't mean I have to like people messing with the guy I love."

"Aww, you're sweet, come here," he said and laid back on her bed, moving so that she could curl up against him if she wanted. "I love you too and it makes me feel good that you care so much. I just don't want you to care at the expense that it's upsetting you too much, Savannah."

Savannah did indeed want to curl up against him. "You'd be angry if someone had done something to hurt or upset me," she pointed out.

She wisely decided not to tell him how she had told Eve she would have sex with him if it would make people stop calling him names.

"You bet I would. They would know it too. But it's different being a guy, Savannah. I'm supposed to be the protective one." He leaned down and kissed her mouth softly.

Johnny would hate to know that she told her mother that and he probably wouldn't take that news well.

Savannah ran her hand through his hair as they kissed. "Why can't I try to protect you, too, Johnny?" Although, she did like it that he was so protective of her, she didn't necessarily agree that it was only the guy's job to be protective.

She was pretty sure that was why Eve had told her not to do that; that when she was really ready it would be more special to him that way.
