Across the Causeway and To The Parking Lot | Around 7 PM Friday Evening

This was it.

Savannah was carrying her last bag of stuff as well as the cat carrier with the new member of her family inside it. Her companion was walking with her, holding onto Destiny's leash. They didn't talk much on the walk from the dorms to the Causeway, nor did they talk as they crossed it. They were still silent as they put the remainder of Savannah's things in her car. Savannah put the cat carrier on the passenger side floor board, and made sure the harness for Destiny was set and ready.

When she could think of nothing else to do to put it off, she looked at her companion sadly.

"I guess this is it."

"Yeah..." K-Mart said quietly, not even smiling when Destiny decided to run around her and wrap the leash around her legs. "I guess it is."

"Hey," she said softly. "It's not like you're never going to see me again. You'll always know where I am, and there's the small matter of a wedding that's going to happen."

She was really trying to be cheerful. Really.

"I know." K-Mart bit the inside of her cheek. "It's just that..." She shook her head. "You know what? Never mind. This is supposed to be a goodbye, right, not me getting all maudlin?"

"No, talk to me, K-Mart," Savannah said quietly. "We're best friends, like sisters. Don't start shutting me out."

"I come from a world where, for a good five years, every time I said goodbye to somebody I didn't know if I was ever going to be seeing them again."

"K-Mart, that's so not going to happen with me. I'm not going to be too far away and if my car or bike can't get to you fast enough, I can take a portal."

"I know, I know." She couldn't help looking a little sheepish. "This just... brings back too many memories."

Savannah reached out and hugged her. "I can understand that, but you're not going to lose me."

K-Mart returned the hug tightly. "Good, because if I lost you then I'd have to find you again just so I could kick your ass."

"Which is added impetus for me not to get lost anywhere." She pulled back to look at her. "You'll be fine. Tomorrow there's a whole new batch of newbies for you to torment and you'll forget all about me for awhile."

"I will not," K-Mart insisted. "But... it is gonna be kinda nice to get another sibling." This was said begrudgingly, like she almost thought it was gonna be wrong to enjoy herself so soon after Savannah's leaving. "I hope I don't get a roommate, though. I don't think I'd be ready for that yet."

"I have faith in you that you'll take very good care of your siblings both old and new." Savannah said softly. "And if you're not ready for a new roommate, then don't let them give you one. I mean, look at Gwynn. She never got a new roommate after mom left."

"I always thought she just lucked out and didn't get assigned one." K-Mart frowned thoughtfully. "I... I guess I could just see how it goes if I get one. I mean, if I get one, maybe it'll be somebody awesome. Though nobody could be as awesome as you."

"I think someone in the administration realized that it wouldn't be a good idea to give her a new roommate unless she asked for one. I'm betting she really didn't want one."

"And if Gwynn doesn't want something, she's fierce as hell about it."

"Yeah, she really is." She gave her a faint smile. "And you can be too."

"I will be," K-Mart promised. "Don't you worry about that."

"Don't let anyone mess with you, okay? I will come back and kick ass."

"And as much as I want you to come back, I don't want it to be that -- 'cause you'd kick their asses AND mine."
